Recreational Rules/Regulations

Recreational volleyball is a program designed to develop players of all ages.  The rules listed below are a guideline to games.  Leniency and patience should be given to all players regarding these rules as the goal is to teach them the game and to develop their skills.

  • The team that first scores twenty-five (25) points in a game shall win that game.
  • A team must win by two (2) points, and there is no cap.
  • The first team to win two sets wins the match.
  • If the match requires a deciding third game, the first team to reach fifteen (15) points with a minimum two-point lead shall win it.
  • If temperatures are high, teams can take a water break during sets. A coach can request a water break and this does not count as a time out.
  • Each team is permitted two time outs during games.
  • A game may be played with less than six players, but no less than 4.

  • To legally serve the ball, a player’s last contact with the ground before contacting the ball must be behind the back service line.
  • Players must wait for the official’s whistle to initiate the serve.
  • The ball is considered in play if the ball contacts the net before going over (net serves are allowed). The net serve is considered in-play, unless 1) it does not continue over the net or 2) lands outside the opposing team’s court-side untouched by the opposing team.
  • The receiving team can NOT attack the ball on a serve (i.e. spike or block).
  • The team that did not initiate service in a game must rotate one position clockwise prior to its first service.
  • U11 teams may serve 3 feet in the court from the service line. For children really struggling to serve UNDERHAND they may move closer to the 10 foot line but may not cross it. For U11 that serve OVERHNAND they may NOT move closer to the net but are allowed to step over the back service line when serving.
  • If a player serves five (5) consecutive times and awards their teams five points the server must change their serving technique (for example: underhand server changes to over-hand serves, over-hand server changes to underhand serves or jump serve)
  • If a player attempts to serve the ball and drops it, they are allowed to serve again.
  • After the serve, front line players may switch positions at the net.
  • First game serve is determined by a captain initiated by the ref choosing a number, toss of a coin, or rock paper scissor. Each subsequent game shall be served by the previous game loser.

Ball in Play

  • Simultaneous contacts are legal when the ball is played. If 2 players on the same team contact the ball simultaneously, it counts as one contact, and any player may play the ball.
  • Players may contact the ball with any part of the body.  Kicking the ball is legal but not encouraged.
  • When a ball touches any part of a boundary line, it is considered in play.
  • The ball is out if it hits the antenna.
  • Leniency will be given in receiving the ball illegally, such as double touches and minor carries. No open palm touches will be allowed.
  • When the ball needs to be given to the other team, it must be ROLLED under the net, never thrown.

  • Only front row players are permitted to block.
  • A block does not count as a team’s first play.
  • The receiving team is not allowed to block or spike a served ball.
  • The team that has affected the block shall have the right to three more contacts, with the blocker having the right to make the first of the three allowable hits.

Contacting the Net

  • The ball may be played off the net (other than when served) as long as the ball does not contact the net outside the sideline markers.

  • There are NO substitutions. The only exception to this is if a player is sick, needs to leave early, or if a coach needs to remove a player for behaving inappropriately towards the ref or the other players.
  • All players will rotate in equally during a service rotation. You can rotate players in at service position (1) or at Front left position (4). You must pick one rotation position and use if for the whole match.
  • All players will receive have equal time on the court based on rotations.

End of Game

  • At the end of the match, Players line up on the side line and approach the net, giving the other team high fives under the net while saying “good game” to the other team.

Championship Games

  •    The end of the season championship games will be based on season standings.  The format of the games will be determined by the number of teams registered in the session.
